There isn't a best, otherwise that combination would be the only one you would see.

It depends on what you want to do.

Want to run up to things and beat it with a stick (sword/axe/hammer)? -> Warrior.
Want to reign fiery death upon things? -> Elementalist
Want to animate the dead to do your bidding? -> Necromancer
Want to heal things, and protect them? -> Monk (One of the harder professions)
Want to confuse things, and deal mostly indirect damage? -> Mesmer (Can be difficult for PvE)
Want to shoot things and place traps? -> Ranger.

Secondary can be pretty much anything, it doesn't matter *that* much. Monk would be Elementalist or Mesmer, Elementalist would be Mesmer or Monk, Necromancer would be Mesmer or Elementalist, Mesmer would probably be Elementalist or Monk. Ranger and Warrior are kind of.. your own pick. Monk is usually a good secondary, though.

The beauty of Guild Wars is that there is NO "wrong choices" for profession. Every single option is viable in PVE. Also, later on you will have the opportunity to change your secondary as many times as you want to. Good Luck, Have Fun, and Welcome to Guild Wars Guru!

Depends on what you like.

Me personally I dont like spellcasters, because they arent as durable as fighters. Hence I got a warrior, ranger, paragon and assassin. Secondary I cahnge depending on what I want to be doing in a bit.

Since you are new, you probably don't realize the further into the game you will be able to change your secondary profession at will in the nearest outpost. When I first started I made a Elementalist / Ranger. I thought having a pet would be cool. Turns out it was a waste of a skill slot. Once I became "ascended" I changed my secondary to mesmer so I could have the same skill twice aka arcane echo'd. That was a long time ago...

Point is, don't worry about it. There's 10 professions and every one can pick a secondary at will and try it out. Just have fun experimenting.

And if they call you a noob, remember they were one once too!

When I started I made a Mesmer/Ranger but found it hard to get to lvl 20 so I deleted that one and started a monk. Monk's are in the BACK row most of the time.

Most other players need "backup" so healing is it - and protection. I however loved SMITING but found it hard to get into a group with that build so I used "henchman" (before there was hero's)

I played him for over a year and then started a WAR/Monk. NOW THIS is a GREAT Class. There is an elite skill that gives the war energy when ever they attack. I use this to get 3 energy every time I hit something. Nice and I use my own protection and healing spells to heal myself and the other 4 skill slots to deal massive damage.

I also like the 80 armor max rating for war. We run in and pound stuff mindlessly. Great fun. You can put runes on your armor and get 100 armor + your shield for a total of 126 armor + skills. This gives the highest armor rating in the game. Calling you a "tank"

If you are going to make a toon for the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title make a MONK Ele in Presearing or ele ranger. Those are by far the best cause of the firestorm skill.

But most of all. Have fun with it and try different classes. Eveyone like me will have their own preference. The poster above said it best with what each class does.
